What is diabetic eye disease?
Diabetic eye disease may include:
Diabetic retinopathy- damage to the blood vessels in the retina.
Cataract clouding of the lens of the eye
Glaucoma- increase in fluid pressure inside the eye that leads to optic nerve damage and loss of vision
Who is at risk for diabetic retinopathy?
Anyone who has DM for more than 5 years. Longer the duration of Diabetes, greater the chances of developing retinopathy. Nearly ½ the diabetic population develop some degree of retinopathy in their lifetime.
